Fireman's Corner, Highgate Cemetery (East)
Within this very large cemetery, dating back to the Victorian era, in Swain’s Lane, on either side of the road is Highgate Cemetery (‘East’ and ‘West’) and in the East side is ‘Fireman’s Corner’, with a memorial and plaques dedicated to the members of the London Fire Brigade who have died in the course of their duties.
Close by, but not actually part of the memorial site is the grave of Sir Eyre Massey-Shaw, arguably one of the most famous UK Chief Fire Officers, and a memorial to Brigade members George Ashford and Henry Berg who were killed at the Alhambra Theatre fire on 7 December 1882 and which it is said, has in carved stone, a fire brigade helmet, axe/hose spanner and branchpipes, taken from the original Brigade monument of the 1880s, which was replaced in 1934.
